Zeb joined colleague Helen Hindle from Growth mindset maths to present at this year's National Mathematics Teacher Conference in Sheffield

"We collaborated remotely on putting the session together" - Helen's in Brighton, and Zeb is in Cardiff - "So we used online tools such as FaceTime and Google Docs to collaborate and it worked really well." - Zeb.

Key points from the session:
  • Progress 8 seems to be incentivising schools to reward progress made by moderate and less able students.  There is strong evidence from research that indicates the attainment of these students is raised in mixed attainment groups, without disadvantaging the more able.
  • We are still training ourselves to refer to 'mixed attainment groups' - rather than 'mixed ability' -  because the latter implies that students have fixed abilities and can't improve.
  • We shared 4 main strategies and all of the material is linked to below:
    - Mysteries for tackling AO3 and wordy GCSE questions
    - Learning journeys which make AfL a breeze
    - Using learning journeys to support the vision in the same class from A* to G
    - The philosophy behind planning for mixed attainment lessons.
The Presentation is available to download from this link.

We'd love to carry on the discussion, so if you'd like to be involved, have something to add or a question to raise, why not use the comments section below to post to Zeb.
